2013 Jul 24

Jeremiah Agojo (Teaneck H.S.), of Teaneck, NJ, attended the third annual Summer Teacher Academy sponsored by the Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Education took place for two weeks on the Metropolitan Teaneck campus from July 8 through July 18, 2013.

The program is designed for 20 local area high school rising seniors from Bergen, Hudson, Morris, and Passaic counties who have expressed an interest in becoming a teacher. All the students who participated are honor students with a 3.0 GPA or better.

Students this year come from Teaneck HS, Paramus HS, Memorial HS in West New York, Northern Valley Regional HS, Hanover Park HS, and the Academy of Holy Angels.

The Academy focuses on mathematics and science and presents many different hands-on activities and workshops that are engaging and fun. As part of the STA, the high school students design and teach a model math or science lesson to the FDU Camp Discovery students who range from grades 2 through 6. Several environmental field trips and activities are planned that make use of up to date equipment like water testing probes and web resource tools like Google Earth. Students are assigned digital cameras that allow them to document their experiences. They are expected to create a multimedia presentation by the end of the program to show to faculty, their parents, and community members. Each student receives a certificate honoring his/her successful completion of the program.

Seven professors at the FDU School of Education are involved in planning and instruction, under the leadership of Dr. Vicki Cohen, Director of the School of Education. Members of the Sammartino Chapter of the New Jersey Student Education Association (NJSEA) assist the professors. Dr. Cohen explained that the purpose of the STA program is to "inspire young people to go into the field of teaching math and science and become effective, qualified, and caring teachers."
